Los \u00c1tomos tratan de mantener el mismo n\u00famero entre las cargas positivas (+) y negativas (-) (protones contra electrones). <em>Un \u00e1tomo de haber perdido un electr\u00f3n se carga positivamente (+), debido al exceso de protones. Un \u00e1tomo que tiene un electr\u00f3n extra se convierte en carga negativa (-).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uno de los \u00e1tomos simples es el \u00e1tomo de hidr\u00f3geno, que contiene un prot\u00f3n y un electr\u00f3n. El prot\u00f3n tiene una carga positiva (+) que permita un equilibrio igual de la carga negativa (-) de los electrones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otros elementos tienen m\u00e1s de un prot\u00f3n y un electr\u00f3n en sus \u00e1tomos. Todos los electrones poseen la misma carga negativa, mientras que todos los protones poseen una carga positiva igual. Cualquier \u00e1tomo estable o el\u00e9ctricamente equilibrado tiene un n\u00famero igual de protones y electrones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Un \u00e1tomo estable, se dice que tiene una carga neutra. <\/strong>Un \u00e1tomo puede tener de uno a m\u00e1s de 100 electrones, dependiendo del elemento. El ox\u00edgeno tiene un n\u00famero at\u00f3mico de 8, por lo tanto, tiene 8 electrones en \u00f3rbita alrededor del n\u00facleo. El cobre tiene un n\u00famero at\u00f3mico de 29, por lo que tiene 29 electrones. Los electrones orbitan alrededor del n\u00facleo tal como los planetas orbitan alrededor del sol. <strong>Los electrones viajan en v\u00edas llamadas capas<\/strong>.
